The Global Health Fellows Program (GHFP-II) is a five year cooperative agreement implemented and managed by the Public Health Institute in partnership with Global Health Corps, GlobeMed, Management Systems International and PYXERA Global. GHFP-II is supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

GHFP-II’s goal is to improve the effectiveness of USAID health programs by addressing the Agency’s immediate and emerging human capacity needs. The program seeks to accomplish this goal first through the recruitment, placement and support of diverse health professionals at the junior, mid and senior levels. These program participants include fellows, interns, corporate volunteers and Foreign Service National professionals. The program then provides substantial performance management and career development support to participants, including annual working planning assistance, and ensures that professional development opportunities are available.

Looking to the future, GHFP-II also seeks to establish a pool of highly-qualified global health professionals that will ensure the Agency’s ongoing technical leadership and effectiveness. This objective is supported by an extensive outreach program that brings global health opportunities and specialized career advice to a diverse range of interested individuals, with a particular focus on those underrepresented in the field of global health.

BACKGROUND:

USAID’s Bureau for Global Health (GH)’s strategic goal of Ending Preventable Child and Maternal Death (EPCMD) supports a global effort to accelerate progress and end preventable child and maternal deaths by 2035. Family planning (FP) is a critical intervention within EPCMD, and is key to accelerating achievement across the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Office of Population and Reproductive Health (PRH) in GH provides technical leadership, strategic direction, implementation oversight, support to field missions, partner coordination, and performance tracking for the FP component of these strategic priorities. Within PRH, the Policy, Evaluation, and Communication Division (PEC) creates the enabling environment for sexual and reproductive health and works with partners within USAID and externally to: (Policy) Promote effective sexual and reproductive health advocacy, policy, financing, and governance; (Evaluation) Collect, analyze, and evaluate data for evidence-based decision making; and (Communication) Develop and implement communication efforts to influence attitudes, norms, and behaviors. The Service Delivery Improvement Division (SDI) develops and applies innovative strategies that improve the performance of individuals, organizations and systems for the sustainable delivery of quality FP/RH services. The PRH EPCMD core team consists of PRH leadership and members from both SDI and PEC who work to ensure the integration of family planning into EPCMD.

INTRODUCTION:

The Family Planning and Sustainable Development Research Intern (Intern) will primarily support the PRH EPCMD core team to conduct research and analysis demonstrating the critical importance of FP in achieving the SDGs. The Intern’s research and analytic work will likely be focused on the intersection of FP and non-health sector programming. The Intern will also work closely with other PRH colleagues, including but not limited to the Population, Environment and Development Technical Advisor. Finally, the Intern will support ongoing programmatic activities of the PRH EPCMD core team as needed. S/he will receive technical guidance from the PRH EPCMD team, including a Public Health Advisor in PEC, who will serve as his/her onsite manager, and a Senior Technical Advisor in SDI.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

• Gaining experience in family planning research, analysis and writing for publication and programmatic use.
• Gaining a greater understanding of how FP/RH technical leadership influences FP/RH programming, advocacy, and policy-making, and how FP/RH is integral to achieving USAID’s global health goals and the broader development agenda, including the five SDG themes of People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnership.
  
• Deepening skills in collaboration and coordination within a complex organizational and implementation structure.
  

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Conducting or completing literature review(s) on the intersections of FP/RH, other health sector, and non-health sector programming and policy-making in developing economies.
  
• Documenting, synthesizing, and analyzing evidence of effective programming, particularly at the intersection of FP/RH and non-health sector programming.
  
• Supporting the PRH EPCMD core team’s research or other technical publications.
  
• Producing briefing materials (written summary and slide sets) related to references, best practices, and lessons learned in coordination with team members.
  
• Preparing the following deliverables in coordination with the EPCMD core team to focus on the topic of family planning and the non-health sector:
  • One PowerPoint presentation – approximately 15-25 slides
  • Three technical briefs (approximately to pages each) or other similar materials
  • One matrix that summarizes key characteristics and findings of studies retrieved and reviewed (approximately 20 pages).
• Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned based on organizational and programming need and/or the Intern’s own interests.
  

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Currently enrolled master’s or other post-bachelor’s degree candidate in a program related to public health, public policy, organizational development, international economics or a related field; or, completion of such within the past 12 months.
  
• Demonstrated interest in public health programming and/or policy in developing countries.
  
• Strong web-based research skills, organizational and planning skills.
  
• Familiarity with research databases, Microsoft Office and Google applications.
  
• Ability to research a broad array of topics, projects, and programs and rapidly analyze, organize and summarize key information.
  
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
  
• US citizenship or US permanent residency required.
  

COMPENSATION:

$1,826 bi-weekly (exempt, salaried position).
