The Global Health Fellows Program (GHFP-II) is a five year cooperative agreement implemented and managed by the Public Health Institute in partnership with Global Health Corps, GlobeMed, Management Systems International and PYXERA Global. GHFP-II is supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

GHFP-II’s goal is to improve the effectiveness of USAID health programs by addressing the Agency’s immediate and emerging human capacity needs. The program seeks to accomplish this goal first through the recruitment, placement and support of diverse health professionals at the junior, mid and senior levels. These program participants include fellows, interns, corporate volunteers and Foreign Service National professionals. The program then provides substantial performance management and career development support to participants, including annual working planning assistance, and ensures that professional development opportunities are available.

Looking to the future, GHFP-II also seeks to establish a pool of highly-qualified global health professionals that will ensure the Agency’s ongoing technical leadership and effectiveness. This objective is supported by an extensive outreach program that brings global health opportunities and specialized career advice to a diverse range of interested individuals, with a particular focus on those underrepresented in the field of global health.

BACKGROUND:

USAID procures and distributes over $1B in health pharmaceuticals and supplies every year and invests over $200M annually to strengthen supply chains in developing countries. With over 100 points of origin, over 50 destination countries, more than 4,000 stock keeping units and thousands of shipments a year, the amount of data generated from its supply chain operation is significant. In addition, there is data residing in multiple country systems and many other data sources that support USAID’s supply chain program. USAID has recently developed a data warehouse and business intelligence tool to house and use these disparate datasets in the management of its supply chain programs and investments.

INTRODUCTION:

The Commodity Security and Logistics (CSL) Division within the Office of Population and Reproductive Health (PRH) in the Bureau for Global Health is seeking a Supply Chain Analytics Intern (Intern) to assist the Business Intelligence Team in (1) gathering business requirements on most impactful analyses and visualizations for users, (2) designing strategic reports and dashboards to support key management units within USAID’s Global Health, (3) identifying business process improvement opportunities centered around the newly developing analytics platform, and (4) support network optimization and inventory optimization efforts for USAID global supply chain. The Intern will work closely with the Senior Supply Chain Technical Advisor as his/her onsite manager.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

• Gaining experience in using transactional supply chain data to set strategy and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the supply chain.
• Gaining a greater understanding of USAID and using data to drive change in a complex organizational environment.
• Deepening technical skills, including SQL, MicroStrategy, optimization/simulation tools, and Excel/Access.

· Deepening skills in collaboration and coordination within a complex organizational and implementation structure.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Using transaction data from USAID’s global supply chain operation and other data sources, in an effort to build out a dashboard and alerting system in a Business Intelligence environment used to support the strategic oversight of USAID’s programs and help shift the organization to one that is more data driven and efficient. This will include the following: integrating a balanced scorecard approach to the most important supply chain key performance indicators; supporting OSM and technical teams (procurement, warehousing and distribution, forecasting, MIS, QA, and M&E) in using available data to drive the business and design strategic analyses, dashboards, reports, and alerts.

· Providing support in analyzing USAID’s global fulfillment network and inventory policies to ensure optimal design and strategy. This could include support of network and/or inventory optimization efforts as well as simulation-based inventory analysis.

· Analyzing raw, semi-structured data from country supply chains and other sources to support the team in making recommendations for improved supply chain planning at the global level.

· Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned based on organizational and programming need and/or the Intern’s own interests.

QUALIFICATIONS:

· Currently enrolled master’s or other post-bachelor’s degree candidate in a program related to supply chain management, logistics, industrial engineering, business, information systems, computer science or a related field; or, completion of such within the past 12 months.

· Demonstrated ability to derive strategic insights from raw data used to assist leaders in setting policies and ensuring sound investments.

· Demonstrated experience with supply chain analytics, preferably including network/inventory optimization simulation, and forecasting.

· Demonstrated experience using analytical tools (Excel, Access, MySQL, Tableau, R, etc.)

· Demonstrated experience with and understanding of supply chain management, procurement, and/or logistics for a large organization.

· Experience with MicroStrategy, plus basic understanding of relational databases and query experience (SQL, etc.) is preferred.

· Strong listening and communication skills.

· US citizenship or US permanent residency required.

COMPENSATION:

$1,826 bi-weekly (exempt, salaried position).
